Sambucus nigra
Elderberry is a native Europena scrub. The tradition of using Elderberry blossoms and fruit reaches back into the middle ages. The first scientific literature in English language, was published as early as in 1677. "The Anatomy of the Elder", written by Dr. Martin Blochwich details the health benefits of Elderberry in various formulations. The language of the historic script was update in 2010 and then also translated into German.
Nowadays Elderberries are commercially cultivated in Austria and Eastern Europe. Preferred varieties contain large amounts of anthocyanins, eg the Haschberg variety.
The small, violet-black fruit of black elderberry (Sambucus nigra L.) is a valued ingredient in supplements for upper respiratory tract health, including syrups and lozenges. In several small clinical trials, extracts of the juice significantly reduced the duration of flu symptoms, as well as their severity. The effectiveness of the elderberry extracts against influenza virus A and B has also been demonstrated.
Elderberry can be used in lozenges, capsules, sirups or other dosage types. We offer extract with up to 25% anthocyanins as well as concentrated and fruit juice powder.
